japanese mikoshiToday was national Health and Sports Day in Japan. The town of Taiza celebrated it by getting drunk first thing in the morning, and bashing each other with portable wooden shrines. It was a pretty good time.

There are 6 districts in Taiza, each with their own shrine. During festivals, the members of the shrine carry these small wooden mikoshi through the streets. A mikoshi is made of two big, long wooden poles that support a small box-type compartment in the middle. The box is decorated with bamboo or other branches and two people sit inside, and pound out a constant beat on a drum they straddle between them.
