Mikoshi

There are two sizes of mikoshi—the big ones take about 40 men to carry them, and the small ones, about 25 or so younger boys. They're supposedly really heavy, and the people always weave all over the streets when they carry them. I'm surprised more shop windows don't get taken out.

japan health and sports dayBy 8 this morning the town was already crazy with drumming and chanting and whistles blowing and directions being shouted out, etc. And all the men were already drunk. They say they need to drink to deal with carrying around a heavy mikoshi all day. Good point.

At around 9 I went with a friend to the house of a woman I work with, where we had prime mikoshi-watching seats. Orito-san had a huge spread set out—sushi rolls, dried squid, pink fishcake with shiso leaf, and these other tubelike fishcake things with cucumber inside. And of course there was beer and sake a-flowing like water. The shrine members would drop their mikoshi (literally, even with the drumming people inside) in front of the house and come in for food and drink. People just opened their homes to anyone.
